POPULATION STRUCTURE: POPULATION PYRAMIDS

POPULATION STRUCTURE

The population structure is based on biological and economic factors.

BIOLOGICAL STRUCTURE: AGE AND SEX

The two biological elements studied in demography are:·

AGE

Population is divided into three groups according to their age:

1.     Young population – people from 0 to 14 years.

2.     Adult population – people from 15 to 64 years.

3.     Elderly over 65 years.·

SEX

This shows the number of males and females in a population. These conclusions can be made in relation to this division:

§  There are more males than females in the young population.

§  There are the same number of males a female in the adult group from 45 to 60 years.

§  Females predominate in the elderly group.

Population structure is reflected in a graph called population pyramids.

POPULATION PYRAMIDS

A population pyramid or age pyramid is a graph combining age and sex factors in a population. It is a double chart reflecting age groups both in male and female populations.

§  The vertical axis represents age groups of male and female populations. Each group covers five years.

§  The three different age groups (young, adult and elderly) form the base, the trunk and the top of the pyramid.

§  The two horizontal axes refer to the male and female populations. The left one is for the males and the right for the females.

§  The number of males and females is expressed in thousands of people or in percentages.
