CHARLEMAGNE´S SUCCESSION

On Christmas Day in year 800, Charlemagne was proclaimed Holy Roman Emperor by pope Leo III in Saint Peter´s Church in Rome.

Fourteen years later Charlemagne died and his son Louis the Pious succeeded him. Louis´ reign there were several power struggles and the empire began  to break out.

After his death there was fighting between his sons . At the end they reached and agreement known as the Treaty of Verdun in 843 and the empire was divided:

  • Charles the Bald received the Western zone.

  • Lothair received the middle zone.

  • Louis the German got the Eastern zone
